Hydration and Urination

It is difficult to overstate the role that your liver and kidneys play in maintaining effective elimination. It is estimated that the liver is responsible for over 500 vital functions and that the kidneys process over 50 gallons of fluid every day. The liver is responsible for breaking down, transforming, and removing chemicals, food additives, excess hormones, medications, and the like. The kidneys work to filter and excrete toxic waste that accumulates in the blood. As such, any effective detoxification or cleansing protocol will place a heavy burden on the liver and kidneys. Because of this, adequate daily hydration becomes critical as it lessens the burden on the liver and kidneys in their effort to biotransform and excrete toxins that can accumulate in the body and eventually find their way into the blood. Simply put, the solution to pollution is dilution.

The most effective way to stay hydrated without impairing digestion is to consistently sip warm water throughout the day. Warm rather than cold water is extremely beneficial because it requires no bodily energy to heat up before it is assimilated. Do not drink large amounts of water at once, as this has a negative effect on digestion, even away from meals. However, after you wake up in the morning and have cleaned your mouth, you can drink a larger amount of warm water, 16 to 24 ounces at once. Adding lemon or lime juice to your morning water also improves digestion and detoxification, particularly with respect to the liver and gall bladder.

Your urine color and clarity is also worth monitoring. In the morning, you will likely notice that it is a bit cloudier and darker colored than it should be during the day. If your urine is a dark yellow or orange during the day, it generally indicates you would benefit from drinking more water. On the flip side, if your urine is clear all the time, you are drinking too much water and may be excessively dumping minerals. Your urine color will naturally fluctuate, but generally it should be a mild to dark yellow and not particularly cloudy.
